Dakota Johnson on the Mental Strain of Social Distancing: ‘Positivity Isn’t Always Easy

In March 2020, when the world was suddenly and dramatically transformed by the global pandemic, it seemed as though life as we knew it had come to a halt. For Dakota Johnson, it wasn’t just the fast-paced life of Hollywood that slowed down, but an intense period of introspection and isolation that took her on an emotional rollercoaster. Like many, she found herself wrestling with the mental toll of being separated from loved ones, the pressure to maintain positivity, and the overarching anxiety brought on by such uncertain times.

In an exclusive conversation, Johnson opens up about her journey through the emotional and mental challenges that came with social distancing. She reflects on her own struggles, the importance of mental health, and the delicate balance she tried to maintain in finding peace amidst the chaos.

The Struggles of Maintaining Positivity

In her typical candid manner, Dakota Johnson doesn’t sugarcoat her pandemic experience. She’s aware of the glamorous image many people might associate with a Hollywood actress, yet she insists that, when it comes to isolation, fame doesn’t offer immunity from its challenges. “I think people assume that if you’re famous or wealthy, somehow you get a free pass from the feelings of loneliness or despair that came with the pandemic,” she shares. “But the truth is, those feelings don’t discriminate.”

One of the hardest things for Johnson was feeling the constant pressure to remain positive when, in fact, she was struggling to get through certain days. “I would wake up some mornings and think, ‘Okay, today’s going to be better,’ and by noon, I’d feel like I was spiraling again.” Like millions of others confined to their homes, she grappled with the emotional weight of uncertainty, of not knowing when—or if—life would return to normal. The actress, known for her introspective and grounded personality, describes the emotional exhaustion that came with constantly trying to stay optimistic.

“There’s this idea that we’re supposed to be positive and productive all the time, but it’s unrealistic,” she says. “Some days, I just couldn’t do it. I felt tired. Tired of putting on a brave face, tired of trying to convince myself everything was fine when it clearly wasn’t.”

Mental Health During Isolation

For Johnson, the isolation period brought a heightened awareness of mental health. The enforced solitude, she says, made her confront aspects of herself she had perhaps been avoiding for years. “I’ve always been aware of my mental health, but the isolation really put a spotlight on things I had to address,” she admits. “I think it did that for a lot of people.”

Johnson’s reflection mirrors the broader experience many had during the pandemic. As time slowed down, people were forced to sit with their thoughts, with their anxieties, and with their uncertainties in ways they hadn’t before. For Johnson, this was both a blessing and a curse. “On the one hand, it gave me the space to reflect on things I had been putting off, emotionally. But on the other hand, it was overwhelming to have so much time with my thoughts and no distractions.”

The actress stresses the importance of seeking help and acknowledging when things feel too heavy. “There were days when I felt like I was losing control,” she confides. “And I’m lucky enough to have access to therapy, which was incredibly helpful. But even with that, I still struggled. Mental health isn’t something that gets fixed overnight, especially during times of extreme stress.”

She hopes that by sharing her story, it can bring awareness to how crucial mental health support is—especially in times of crisis. “I think, as a society, we have to start taking mental health more seriously. The pandemic exposed how fragile we all are in that respect. And it’s not just about having access to therapy; it’s about having systems in place that support emotional well-being, whether that’s through community, workplace policies, or even just fostering more open conversations about how we’re really feeling.”

Finding Balance Amidst the Chaos

So, how did Dakota Johnson manage to cope? As with many people during the pandemic, the actress found herself navigating a delicate balance between self-care and simply getting through the day. “At first, I tried to be productive. I was baking, working out, journaling—all those things people said we should do to stay sane,” she recalls with a smile. “But after a while, I realized that I couldn’t keep up with that level of productivity all the time. It was exhausting.”

Johnson’s revelation came when she accepted that it was okay not to be okay all the time. “I had to learn to be kinder to myself,” she says. “I’m someone who’s always striving for balance, and I was trying to do everything—meditate, exercise, keep in touch with friends, work on creative projects—but there were days when all I could do was lie on the couch and watch TV. And I had to learn that that was enough.”

She speaks about the small routines that helped her regain some sense of control, like having a cup of tea in the morning, going for a walk in the afternoon, or reading before bed. “It wasn’t about achieving big goals or creating masterpieces during isolation; it was about finding tiny moments of peace, tiny things I could look forward to each day.”

Through this, Johnson discovered new hobbies and interests that helped her navigate the loneliness. “I took up knitting, which I never thought I’d do,” she laughs. “It was something I could do with my hands, and it calmed me down. I also started gardening, and there was something very therapeutic about watching something grow when so much around me felt like it was falling apart.”

Relating to Fans

One of the things Johnson values most about her experience is how it’s connected her to her fans on a deeper level. “I’ve always wanted to be open with people who look up to me,” she says, “because I think it’s important to show that we’re all human. The pandemic really leveled the playing field in that way—suddenly, we were all going through the same thing.”

She recalls receiving messages from fans who were also struggling with isolation, and it reinforced her desire to be honest about her own challenges. “It’s easy to look at someone’s Instagram or see them in a movie and think they have it all together. But that’s not reality. And I think, now more than ever, people need to see the real side of things.”

For Johnson, the key takeaway from her experience with social distancing is the importance of vulnerability and connection. “If I’ve learned anything during this time, it’s that we’re all more alike than we realize. Everyone is dealing with something, and the more we talk about it, the less alone we feel.”

In opening up about her own emotional journey, Dakota Johnson has not only humanized herself but also created a space for her fans to feel seen and heard. She hopes that by sharing her story, others will feel empowered to talk about their own struggles and seek help when needed. “We’re not meant to go through hard times alone,” she says. “And if anything good has come out of this pandemic, it’s that we’re all a little more connected in our shared experiences.”

Looking Ahead

As the world slowly emerges from the shadow of the pandemic, Johnson is cautiously optimistic. “I don’t think life will ever go back to the way it was, and in some ways, I don’t want it to,” she reflects. “I think we’ve all learned a lot about what’s really important—our relationships, our mental health, and taking care of ourselves in meaningful ways.”

While she’s eager to get back to work, she’s also taking her time to ensure she maintains the balance she’s worked so hard to find. “I’m excited to return to acting and to connect with people again. But I also don’t want to lose the lessons I’ve learned during this time. It’s about finding that sweet spot between productivity and rest, between being connected and taking time for myself.”

For Dakota Johnson, the pandemic was a challenging and transformative period, one that forced her to confront the complexities of mental health and isolation. But through it all, she’s emerged with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to those around her. As she continues to share her story, Johnson reminds us that it’s okay to struggle, it’s okay to be vulnerable, and most importantly, it’s okay to ask for help.
